The London Marathon was first held in 1981 and has since grown to be one of the most popular running events worldwide. In 1982, Dulcie King won the first-ever women’s race. At that time, the course was a bit shorter than it is now and it consisted of just 42 miles.

In 2009, 22,000 runners participated in the marathon and by 2017 this number had increased to 37,000 which means an average increase of about 400 participants per year. The London Marathon organizers are considering making entry even more competitive with a cap on how many runners can participate each year and charging higher fees for entries.
